On September 18, 2018, approximately 100 AUHS students, faculty and staff gathered to celebrate the launch of the University Campus Ministry. The inaugural Walk on Water event featured an afternoon of fellowship with picnics, prayers, and games by the campus lake.
The event began with opening remarks from university president, Dr. Caroll Ryan who welcomed the AUHS community with a message of reflection and the importance of faith and family for the university. Senior Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, Dr. Jack Chen, who helped found the ministry, then shared the vision of Walk on Water.
“Walk on Water was founded on three principles. One being, step out. You got to step out of the boat and walk with confidence and stay focused,” said Dr. Chen. “Another being, go together. Here at AUHS, we’re not only preparing you academically and professionally, but also to be spiritually mature. Walk with us and walk with each other. Learn with each other and with Jesus. And always be faithful.”
The welcome remarks were followed by a reception that gave students a slate of afternoon activities. Everything ranging from a taco truck and raffle giveaway—to bubble roller competitions on the university lake. Students new and old were able to bond and mingle with their fellow AUHS students and staff.
“This is a refreshing event. It’s a great way to ease in the new students make them feel welcome. It’s been a great way to bond” said BSN student, Warlord Pascual. “I volunteered to help because I’m graduating soon and I wanted to give back. Since I’m graduating next year my course load is a little less and I had some extra time to support the newer students.”
One of the new BSN students, Christopher, added “I’m here for my orientation and with my cohort, cohort 24. The event is pretty great. I was not expecting it. I’ve enjoyed the school and I’m having a great time so far.”
