Giving Groceries and a Thanksgiving Turkey to Local Families in Need

The holiday season is a time to reflect on all of the things that we have to be thankful for. Part of reflecting back on our blessings, though, is understanding that there are those in our world as well as those in our own community who are not nearly as fortunate as we are.

At AUHS, we wanted to do something this holiday season to give back some of the blessings we’ve been given and make the holidays a more comfortable, enjoyable time for those in our community who are struggling. At our quarterly Acts of Love event, AUHS students and staff members gave out groceries to the homeless and free flu vaccines were administered by our School of Pharmacy faculty.

The event was an amazing success. All told, we gave out 600 turkeys, 3,000 pounds of carrots, 6,000 pounds of potatoes, 3,000 pounds of yams, 3,000 pounds of rice, 600 boxes of stuffing, and 1200 cans of vegetables to the homeless in our community. In addition to this, 74 people received a free flu vaccination from our School of Pharmacy faculty.

We would like to give a special thanks to our partner schools and social service agencies in Long Beach and Signal Hill that AUHS Foundation distributed vouchers to so they can identify the families in need:

  • Lafayette Elementary School
  • Bobbi Smith Community School
  • Signal Hill Elementary School
  • Whittier Elementary School
  • Alvarado Elementary School
  • United Cambodian Community
  • Cambodian Association of America
  • Pacific Asian Counseling Services
  • Lutheran Social Services
  • WIC- Women, Infant & Children program

I am incredibly proud of the way our students, faculty, and entire community came together to care for others through this event. Acts of kindness such as this are what the holiday spirit is all about.
