Pharmacy Technology (PT)
Because of the changes affecting the healthcare industry, the role of the Pharmacy Technician and professionals working within the pharmacy environment, has continued to grow and change. Today, Pharmacy Technicians work in any number of pharmacy environments, such as retail pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, home healthcare, long term care, and managed care. The purpose of this program is to provide the student with the theory and hands-on experience necessary for an entry-level position as a Pharmacy Technician capable of working in any pharmacy environment or related healthcare industry.


Full Time: M-F 7AM-1PM
Externship: 40 hrs/wk
Program Length: 925 hrs (~7 1/2 months)

Part Time: M-Th 2PM-6PM or 6PM-10PM
Externship: 30 hrs/wk
Program Length: 925 hrs (~11 months)

 

Objectives
  • Knowledge and understanding of different pharmacy practice settings.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the duties and responsibilities of a technician in relationship to pharmacists and of standards and ethics, laws and regulations governing pharmacy practice.
  • Knowledge and ability to identify and employ pharmaceutical and medical terms, abbreviations and symbols commonly used in prescribing, dispensing and charting medications.
  • Knowledge and ability to apply identification, general chemical and physical properties of drugs handled in a pharmacy.
  • Knowledge and ability to carry out calculations required for common dosage determination and preparation of solutions employing both the metric and apothecary systems.
  • Knowledge and understanding of drug dosages, a route of administration, and dosage forms.
  • Knowledge of and ability to perform manipulative and record keeping functions involved in and related to dispensing prescriptions for ambulatory patients.
  • Knowledge of and ability to perform procedures and techniques related to aseptic compounding and admixture of parenteral product.
  • Knowledge of and ability to perform procedures and techniques related to aseptic compounding of cryotoxic agents, including knowledge of applicable state or federal regulations.
  • Knowledge of and ability to perform the technician functions in an institution drug distribution system.
  • Knowledge of and ability to perform basic PC computer functions and MS Office package.
